EVENTS IN COZUMEL

Souls with Tradition

The “Souls with Tradition” Festival in Cozumel is a cultural celebration that honors the memory of ancestors through art, music, offerings, and the customs of the Day of the Dead. This festival combines traditional knowledge and cultural diversity with parades, altar displays, contests, and artistic activities that reflect the spirit of the local community and its deep connection to traditions.

Cozumel Carnival

Cozumel Carnival is one of the most important and vibrant festivals in Mexico. Celebrated since the 19th century, it fills the streets with color, music, and parades full of traditional troupes and allegorical costumes. This popular festival attracts both locals and visitors every year and is celebrated with enthusiasm from the week before Mardi Gras, establishing itself as a deeply rooted cultural tradition.

Each year, this pilgrimage recreates the journey of ancient canoeists paddling from the old port of Polé (now Xcaret Park) to the island of Cozumel, as a tribute to the goddess Ixchel, a deity associated with the moon, fertility, and wisdom. During the journey, hundreds of participants paddle traditional canoes for more than 30 km across the Caribbean Sea, culminating in ceremonial events, music, and rituals on the Chankanaab coast in Cozumel. This event not only honors pre-Hispanic roots but also promotes cultural tourism in Quintana Roo, offering visitors and locals a direct connection to Mayan history and worldview.

The Sacred Mayan Journey is a unique opportunity to witness an ancient tradition that combines culture, spirituality, and nature in the heart of the Mexican Caribbean.
